This is going to be a crash course about websites to those of you who already have one. Now many of you are competent, capable and knowledgeable about how to make your website work for you. This is not for you.
This is for people who want to learn how a website makes money! In contrast, we want to help you understand why your website might not be making any money for you.
We are going to start with the basics and dispel the top five nasty rumors.
- Putting a website on the Internet will automatically help my business! Wrong! Surprised? We'll talk more about this soon.
- I can't afford a website - they are too expensive. A high quality website for an entire year is usually less than one newspaper ad for one day!
- A website will not help my company. A website can help any company - the value is in the exposure!
- I can make my own and do the same thing. Maybe, but we spend 10-12 hours a day, 7 days a week optimizing and building websites on behalf of our clients and we're really good at it. It takes somewhere between 4 and 100 hours to build a quality website - once launched, it takes about 4 hours to optimize it, and after that it takes about 2 hours per month to continue optimization and ensure site ranking gains. Throw in another 12 hours a year for updates, maintenance, content changes and photograph exchanges. Of course, one of the catches here is knowing where to look, who to contact, how to submit, and how to know you were successful. We graciously offer to do this for you, while you keep doing what you are good at.
- My friend is going to make me a website and take care of it for me. No he won't, no he can't and you will eventually be angry at your friend. Save the friendship, don't go here.
There are few thousand more, but these are the most common ones. So let's talk about it.
Simply uploading or placing a website on the Internet will do very little to help your business. At best, you might get picked up by a couple of local directories that want you to spend $30 a month to be listed in their "Local Merchants" site, and you might get scanned by a "google" via your business phone number listed in the Yellow Pages. This is about the extent of what you get when you simply put a site on the web. Do not expect much from this exposure.
Custom Web Sites of Georgia makes sure your website is found by the people you want to find it. This can equate to us submitting your site to 10-15 search engines all the way up to thousands of search engines around the globe. There are also hundreds of other opportunities to advertise your business across the web. We all live in or around Houston County, which is of course, host to literally millions of visitors annually at the Ag Center and Fairgrounds alone. This does not take into account the Air Force Base that entertains guests, new families, transits, etc, by the thousands each year as well. The bottom line here is that if you are not reaching out to the people who are going to come here, and are only advertising to the people who are already here, you're missing a million opportunities a year.
Search Engine Optimization is the key to making your website successful. If you put your business on a billboard and then set it behind your garage no one would see it. The Internet is exactly the same way. You have to put your sign where people can see it. This is a large task, that must be done repeatedly, without fail to keep your site in view. Search engine companies know when a site is not working well. They do not want to put such a site on their front pages because visitors would quickly tire of looking at the same boring websites. To stay upfront, your site must get a large number of hits and continually change its content to remain desirable .
Our first job is to evaluate your website. I know a lot of companies out there who say they can upgrade your site, fix your errors, re-do your links, etc. They are misleading you. They have no intentions of doing any of those things. In reality, it is easier to make you a new site from scratch than to ever go in and try to "Rebuild" what you have. It is likely however, that we would at least use some of the assets already on your current website. Assets are content, images, banners, links, etc. The exception to this rule is if you have a "huge" website that is truly broken. We can help you know the difference and would quote accordingly.
Do you have website that is unfinished?
Don't feel alone. It is not uncommon. A lot of novice and amateur web designers out there can quickly get in over their head amidst the complexities of today's technologies and code requirements. You need to ask your prospective designer what tools he will be using to build your website. We invest heavily in the latest software's and technology, probably just like you do in your business.
